Tracking an 'Advertising Campaign' with Google Analytics

If we look at the definition of 'Advertising Campaign' it it's widest sense, we can make analytics work quite hard for us, that otherwise might have gone un-noticed...

In this example, I wish to track a distribution of CD-ROM's that I have created, containing a number of HTML files. My 'Ad Campaign' consisted of a co-ordinated mass mailing of these CD's to the target audience - with the (hopeful) result that I have increased both awareness and interest in the subject.

The CD

  • There will be multiple CD's. Each CD will deal with a particular subject.
  • Each subject will be updated at intervals. Each CD therefore has a version number
  • Each CD should posess a unique tracking-id.
    • Copied CD's are good. It shows where we can best target an audience
    • Copied CD's are difficult to keep track of!

The Website

  • Each CD can contain code which, if the user is connected to the internet, will fetch data.
    • This can inform the user that the current version they are using is obsolete.
    • This can inform us that the disk is in active use.

The Solution

So far, the only way I can see of sorting this is by using Campaign Variables:

  *  Source =
  *  Medium =
  *    Term =
  * Content =
  *    Name =

The Reports.

  • Content
    • Content by Title
      Give each page a useful, meaningful title.
    • foobar
